It has a history rich in manufacturing and the Silk industry. It is known as the “Silk City” for its dominant role in silk production during the late 19th century.
The city was built up around the Great Falls of Passaic River, which received National Park Status in 2009. Planners sought to harness the energy produced by the 77-foot high falls. Mills that were built up around the falls were powered by the waterfalls. The city grew around the mills. The district included mills and manufacturing structures associated with the textile industry, firearms, silk and railroad locomotive manufacturing.
During this period, the city was a mecca for immigrant laborers who worked in the factories. Today, the city’s growth and economy has been boosted my immigrants who still migrate to Paterson for the small business opportunities.
Downtown Paterson is the main commercial district and has been a shopping and leisure destination for many years. Downtown Paterson is also home to the City Hall and the Passaic County Courthouse Annex – two of the city's architectural landmarks. Downtown Paterson is an Urban Enterprise Zone, where shoppers only pay 3 1/2 % sales tax on purchases at UEZ registered businesses. The Center City mall project is near completion. The project converted a downtown parking lot into a commercial, retail and entertainment center with office space.
The city is rich with history, diversity and opportunity.
