The Paterson (Noontime) Rotary Club is currently raising money to help in the effort of disaster relief in Haiti by sponsoring and sending ShelterBoxes to the devastated country.

What is a ShelterBox?

Shelterbox is a very effective and immediate-response program supported by individual Rotary Clubs worldwide.  ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth, and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide. If you were to look inside these Rotary emblazoned boxes, you would find a sturdy tent which could accomodate ten people, a multi-fuel cook stove with cooking utencils and pots and pans, two treated mosquito nets, sleeping mats and sleeping bags, enough water purification tablets to provide clean drinking water for ten people for 6 months, two 5-gallon collapsible water container(and two 2-gallon), 10 water-proof ponchos, tools that can be used for survival such as flashlights, a wood saw, 50-ft nylon rope, hatchet, etc., Here is a link to a You Tube video about ShelterBox, which will give you an understanding of how immediate the aid which a ShelterBox will provide.

 What Can you Give?

Well, that is a question only you can answer. Each box is $1,000. If you can find it in your heart and wallet to donate $100, $75, $50 or $25 toward a ShelterBox, please e-mail Paterson Rotary at rotary@greaterpatersoncc.org or call 973-881-7300. Checks can be made out to “Paterson Rotary Club Foundation” and sent to Paterson Rotary, 100 Hamilton Plaza, Suite 1201, Paterson, NJ 07505. 

If you have been watching the news than you know the devastation (1.5 million left homeless), you know the need.  We hope you will help us to raise funds for an emergency project that we feel is worth every cent we can raise.

Chances are, that if you work in the Downtown Paterson area, you’ve bought your lottery tickets at Uhlen’s Card Shop at 116 Ellison Street. You’ve been greeted with a warm smile and friendly conversation by Barbara Guarente – Infact, she is so friendly I’ve never felt upset that a lottery tickt was not a winner. (Sometimes) 

Guarente can often been seen reading cards to customers with bad eyesight, in an effor to help them pick out the perfect greeting card for a loved one.

 “That’s the kind of service you can expect at my store,” said Guarente. “Everyone is an important customer.”

Uhlens also sells helium balloons and small gifts for all occasions (birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Baby Showers, etc.). Simply order the balloons for your function and pick them in-store.
